We’ve all heard the proverbial phrase, “when life gives you lemons make lemonade.” Well that’s exactly what we’ll do! We’re going to talk about so much more than just lemonade. Lemons have so many health and beauty benefits. Being that it is rich in vitamin C and citric acid it can improve your skin. Lemons come with countless nourishing elements such as vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc and so much more. Let’s start with just lemons in your water. Adding fresh lemon juice to your water will not only improve your skin, but it will also help freshen your breath, prevent kidney stones and help rid you of that stubborn stomach fat. Now, I’m not saying that all you’ll need to do is drink lemon water and you’ll lose all the weight. Some dieting and exercise is needed as well, but we’ll get to that in another post. Lets get back to the benefits of lemon water. One of the most beneficial times to add lemon to your water is first thing in the morning. By adding it to warm water this will help jump start your day by boosting your immune system, re-hydrating your body, and help with digestion. If you have sensitive teeth be mindful of the acid in the lemon juice and rinse with water after to remove any excess.
You can mix lemons with numerous things to make a refreshing detox drink. My personal favorite is a lemon, cucumber, and mint mix. If you are anything like me and need a little extra flavor to help you achieve your water intake goals, then this is perfect and good for you.

Now let’s talk about face masks! Using fresh lemon juice can make so many different face masks or an individual can use it by itself to treat your problem areas. Whether it’s to treat dark spots, aging skin, acne treatment, or even just to exfoliate. You can create your own tailored mask for any skin type. Rich in vitamin C, it will help to boost collagen for firmer skin, reduce the appearance of dark spots, and any type of sun damage. It is the easiest and most cost effective way to treat all your skin problems. Here’s a mask you can try for dark spots:
Lemon with Honey Dark Spot Mask
1 tablespoon of organic raw honey
2 tablespoon of fresh squeezed lemon juice
any facial/make up brush to apply the mask
combine all together in a bowl and apply to skin, avoiding the eye area
allow the mask soak in for about 10 to 15 mins, then rinse with warm water
The honey provides moisture and will make your skin soft and supple. While the lemon juice will brighten and clear your skin. Remember to follow up with SPF after this mask if you plan on having any sun exposure.
Sometimes the most forgotten thing on our face is our lips. We tend to forget that our lips need love too. Who really wants to buy an expensive lip scrub when you can make one at home for a fraction of the cost? It’s quick, easy, and taste quite yummy! The brown sugar provides a gentle exfoliator, the honey will help to get rid of dry/chapped or dead skin from the lips, and the lemon will lighten the lips removing any darkness.
Lemon Sugar Lip Scrub
1 tablespoon of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of honey or olive oil
1 teaspoon of fresh squeezed lemon juice
Combine the ingredients in a bowl until it is like paste and not runny. Apply to lips in a circular motion and let sit for a minute, and then wipe off with a warm towel. Follow up with your favorite lip balm. Since this is a homemade lip scrub there is no preservatives therefore, it will only last about 1 to 2 weeks if kept refrigerated. Before use, let the scrub sit out for a few minutes to adjust to room temperature to make applying it easier.
A natural way to lighten any problem areas is by using lemons. As you already know from this lengthy post lemons are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, which brightens the skin over time. Having a little more melanin in your skin can some times cause the dead skin cells to appear black on your elbows or knees. An easier and safe way to lighten up those areas without using any harsh bleaching creams is by rubbing a half of a lemon on both of your elbows and letting the lemon juice sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and moisturize after. Do this 2 to 3 times a week until the darkness has cleared up. An additional mix for bleaching is by mixing together 1/4 cup of baking soda and just enough lemon juice to make a paste like consistency. This is a bit more intense variety. Rub the mixture on to the problem areas and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and follow up with a moisturizer.
Now that we’ve covered a few of the benefits of lemons, you can see all the endless possibilities. We can mix and match so many things to achieve the face mask, lip scrub, or detox water that best fits your needs. We are on our way to a healthier and safer lifestyle. All with one fruit!
